Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Sunday elected former vice president Atiku Abubakar as its presidential candidate for the 2019 general elections.

With Atiku’s victory, the 2019 presidential election is now a straight battle between him and the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, President Muhammadu Buhari.

Atiku got 1,532 votes to emerge winner, while Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal scored 693 votes.

From 3,274 delegates accredited, the PDP National Convention held in Port Harcourt recorded a number of 68 invalid votes.

Other contestants scored the following votes: Senate President Bukola Saraki 317; Gombe State Governor Ibrahim Dakwambo 111; former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwakwanso 158; former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido 96; former senate president David Mark 35; former Sokoto State governor, Attahiru Bafarawa 48; former Kaduna State governor, Ahmed Makarfi 74; former minister, Kabir  Turaki 65; Senator Datti Baba 5; and former Plateau State governor, Jonah Jang 19.

In his message shortly after the election, Atiku commended his party, saying “PDP, thank you for choosing me. This is a victory for all of us. The task to get Nigeria working again starts now.”
